Audrey L. Reyes
A Quick Dissection of My Lover’s Philosophy on Carly Rae Jepsen & Pancakes
I.
You should hear her speak:
the otherwise mundane arrives gift-wrapped
in personal revelation and unwraps almost like a poem
if it were any other day
a homily about a pop singer’s psalms
on your heartache wouldn’t compel
yet I stand before you: a reformed believer,
heart raked and piled for Carly Rae’s chorus.
I hastily convert to her church.
II.
You should hear her speak:
her voice heightens in excitement on medium low heat,
her speech quickens into a smooth buttercream froth
If it were someone else
a list of ingredients would’ve sounded grey,
the scrolling ticker would read:
I know this much is true.
I wanted to love her as much as her contentment
rose for pancake fluff, and I wanted her
to love me with as much care when she separates
the eggs for beating before mixing in the dry ingredients.
I pour her maple-syrup gospel down my throat.
